Your First Pregnancy – Here’s What To Expect

If you are trying to get pregnant with a baby boy or girl, or already know that you are expecting, you will have many concerns and doubts.

Here’s what to expect during your first pregnancy.

You will want more rest and sleep than usual, and may be surprised at how quickly and easily you get tired. Some enlightened employers offer a quiet place where pregnant women can get a brief nap during a break or lunch hour.

If yours doesn’t yet, put in a request when you know you are pregnant. Companies strive to keep productive workers, and this is an easy request for them to grant.

Get morning sickness (as it is called, even though it can happen at any time of day or night) under control. Generally, rest helps, but the usual over the counter medications for nausea, vomiting, and dizziness don’t help much. However, there are medications that do help. Mention it to your doctor or caregiver.

It helps to eat six small meals a day, rather than two or three larger ones.

Manage stress. Pregnancy is a big change in your life, you’re dealing with baby brain (and maybe also lack of sleep and feeling sick), so do what you can to manage the stress.

Meditation helps some people; others choose gentle exercise such as going for a swim, a walk or doing yoga for pregnancy poses.

Other things that can help: asking for help and off-loading some of your usual responsibilities on others, taking time for long warm baths, learning deep breathing exercises and doing them daily, spending time with friends or doing other things such as reading or playing with a pet – all good ways to de-stress and relax.

Get good care. Your medical caregiver (or caregiver team) can help you feel healthy and address your fears and concerns.

When you are pregnant, or trying to get pregnant, you can also find good information, help and support from friends who are parents, parenting books, parenting websites and the other parents giving and getting advice on forums online.
