Treatments for infertility

Infertility is defined as a couple trying to conceive without success for a year. The amount of time is shorten to 6 months if the woman is 35 years or older. About 10% of couples in the United States face fertility challenges. Both men and women have an equal share to the problem – one third of the cases is due to infertility in women, one third due to infertility in men, and surprisingly one third is due to infertility in both men and women. Fortunately, there are a number of infertility treatment options around to help those who are fertility-challenged. A doctor can best help with each individual case.

Very often the first step a doctor will take in treatments for infertility is to check the woman’s cycle. An ovulation kit wil be of great help in this. The doctor will give the exact instructions. Determining ovulation can greatly increase the chances of conception. The doctor will surely give advice on lifestyle and diet; both the man and woman should quit smoking, cut down on alcohol consumption (the woman shouldn’t drink at all), and eat well-balanced healthy meals. The man should eat a diet rich in zinc, which is known to help increase sperm count. The woman should consider taking preconception vitamins and include folic acid in her diet.

If the ovulation kit doesn’t provide the desired results, the doctor may perscribe one or more drugs as treatments for infertility. There are many different types available, the doctor will know which is best to treat the condition. The drugs are either taken orally or being injected. One thing that you’ll want to talk to your doctor about; some of the drugs may increase the chance of multiple births. Having twins or triplets can lead to other medical consequences, for example low birth weight; you’ll be able to find out more information from your doctor.

If the medications don’t work, there are other forms of infertility treatments to help. Another possibility is artificial insemination, in which the woman is injected with sperm into her vagina or uterus. Another treatment is known as assisted reproduction technology. Also known as ART, the eggs are removed from the woman, fertilized, and then placed back inside the woman. ART is often the chosen treatment for women over the age of 35. Surgery may be required to treat varicocele in men.Your doctor will let you know of all the possibilities. You may also want to learn ways to increase fertility naturally.
