Prenatal Classes Impart Helpful Breastfeeding Information
Prenatal Classes are important for a whole host of reasons, including providing beneficial information on breastfeeding. Not so long ago all but a few women found their way with breastfeeding their children. The last fifty years has seen an alarming drop in breastfeeding rates, especially in the western world. A good prenatal class will discuss the issues and obstacles surrounding breastfeeding, while giving women the encouragement to persevere.
So, why can it be so problematic to breastfeed?
(1) Cultural reasons. Regardless of where the woman is from in the world there are potent cultural forces that can inhibit breastfeeding. In many poorer countries, those with means often look upon breastfeeding as being a lower class activity. Meanwhile, whether they live in their original country or they immigrate to a western country, they will not even consider breastfeeding and instead turn immediately to.
(2) Familial reasons. Putting culture aside, in many families none of the women have breastfed. So, there is often minimal backing for a young mother who longs to breastfeed. And sometimes there is downright hostility.
(3) Vanity reasons. Arguably, the saddest reason for not breastfeeding is that desirable. This drawback is rather unpolitically correct to discuss openly.
(4) Societal reasons. Regardless of where you live, once you leave the house the general populace can be rude and unaccommodating to women breastfeeding, which can be upsetting, particularly for a new mother.
(5) Hospital. A lot of hospitals not only do not encourage breastfeeding, but make it doubly likely of taking place by contributing free formula provided by the companies.
(6) Latching Problems. This obstacle is often related to one or some of the above reasons. It’s tough when the baby won’t latch well. Fortunately, for women determined to make it work a Lactation Consultant will in the vast majority of cases do the trick.
So, breastfeeding is not always a given. Conversely the benefits, physically and emotionally, of breastfeeding, both for child and mama, are immense. See to it that your Prenatal Class will properly address this vital topic.
