All you need to know about infertility trials

Infertility trials can be a terrific way of getting cutting edge treatment or medication more affordably than the usual rates. Ensure that you do your research so you don’t wind up wasting your time.

The Center for Human Reproduction (CHR) has a list of some infertility trials that are looking for participants, but don’t get too excited you should know what you’re getting yourself involved in.

  • To begin with you’ll need to meet the requirements for the trials. For instance they could need Asian women married to Latino men younger than themselves, who live in Alaska and breed Burmese cats. Confirm who is permitted to participate before you start filling out forms and getting your hopes up! Also make sure with your doctor before you submit an application.
  • Make sure that you know what the trial aims to find out. Certain studies check treatments, which can benefit you while others are just aiming to collect data in which case you won’t benefit directly from the study.
  • What research techniques are they using? You might be given a placebo in which case you might not gain at all. A placebo is when they give you dummy medicine rather than medicine with the testable substance in them to check that it is the medication that is working, rather than your optimistic thinking.
  • Ensurethat you know what the cash outlay is, if any. Some trials are fully funded so you could not need to pay anything above your transport costs to and from the clinic. Each study is different, so verify costs before you get involved.
  • What are the potential hazards? Both you and your partner must know precisely what the risks are, if any, and choose whether you are ready to take the chance. Understand that there are no guarantees that the treatments will work, but on the other hand, there is a possibility that they could. You’ll have to make the choice.

Even though you might not benefit from a particular test, your contribution will have benefitted other infertile couples. When partaking in infertility trials you need to take care that you have done your homework.
